Welcome to the Graphic Design Research Guide!

This guide is to help you get a jumpstart on art research by giving an overview of what art resources are available in the library, along with some quick tips on how to find and use them. This resource guide was created in support of the SUU Graphic Design Major.

Databases

This streaming video service always provides a variety of videos chosen by professors in your discipline, including some which focus specifically on Graphic Design.

Periodicals and Serials

Although many of the journals and annuals we have in Sherratt Library are available in electronic form, sometimes a print copy is the only way to go. Below is a list of periodicals and serials we have in print and electronic formats. (Note: Print copies of periodicals are housed in the collapsible shelves on the first level, organized alphabetically by title, where serials are in the book shelves, organized by call number, like books).

Books and eBooks

At Sherratt Library we use the Library of Congress Classification (LCC) system to organize the items on our shelves. These call "numbers" (they're really letters) on the spines are used for most of our items, including print books and ebooks. Below is a list of call numbers that relate to Graphic Design directly or peripherally (browsing these sections in the shelves on the 2nd level, or 3rd level for oversized items, can reveal resources you never knew you needed)!

Graphic Design Archives

AIGA Deisgn Archives
The AIGA archives identify, preserve, and make available records to support research.
Archives.design
A digital archive of graphic design related items that are available on the Internet Archives.
Milton Glaser Design Archives
The Milton Glaser Design Study Center and Archives, a division of the Visual Arts Foundation, is dedicated to preserving and making accessible design works of significant artistic, cultural, and historical value by preeminent designers, illustrators, and art directors who have close ties to the School of Visual Arts.
People's Graphic Design Archive
The People’s Graphic Design Archive is a crowd-sourced virtual archive that will include everything from finished projects to process, photos, letters, oral histories, anecdotes, published and unpublished articles, essays, and other supporting material in the form of documents, videos, audio, as well as links to other relevant archives and websites.
Rochester Institute of Technology
The Graphic Design Archive (GDA) at Rochester Institute of Technology documents and preserves the work of significant American graphic designers active from the 1920s to the 1960s, as well as selected contemporary designers working in the modernist traditions.
