Welcome to the Belonging Research Guide!

This guide is to help you get a jumpstart on belonging research by giving an overview of what resources are available in the library, along with some quick tips on how to find and use them.

Databases - General

Sherratt Library provides access to a number of databases on a wide range of subjects. Below is a list of databases with content related to Outreach & Engagement.

The general databases in each subject area, such as Education Full Text, Business Source Premier, and PsycINFO, will also contain information on belonging topics. Be sure to check these databases and stop by the Questions Desk for help.

Full text academic journals in many disciplines, typically limited to issues older than 1-5 years. Search for your topic from the JSTOR search window or select BROWSE by Subject.

Journals and select books from the university presses of Johns Hopkins, Ohio State, Penn State, U of California, U of Arizona, U of Maryland, U of North Carolina, U of Virginia, and other institutions
Covers literature and criticism, history, visual and performing arts, cultural studies, education, political science, gender studies, and others.

Access to essential, often-overlooked perspectives of ethnic and minority groups in newspapers, magazines, and journals, 1990-present. The publications offer both national and regional coverage. Ethnic NewsWatch™ is the only current database devoted to presenting multi-ethnic and multi-cultural publications in one resource. Coverage begins in 1990 and is updated daily with new content. Many of the titles are not found in any other aggregated resource.
Gale Access Program This link opens in a new window
The Gale Access Program delivers 50 most commonly used databases at the top academic institutions across the globe. The Gale Access Program provides support for key courses as well as key majors: business, health, nursing, technology, humanities, social sciences, sciences and more. It offers easy integration into course syllabi, learning management systems and LibGuides. The program provides affordable supplemental materials for teaching & learning as well as a wide spectrum of content and tools to bridge varying skills levels across the student body.

Curated collection of material showing differing points of view on current social issues. Articles from Opposing Viewpoints, Current Controversies, At Issue, Contemporary Issues Companion, and Gale Information Plus.

This is a list of directories to subject and discipline experts from diverse backgrounds.

500 Queer Scientist
500 Queer Scientists wants to "ensure the next STEM generation has LGBTQ+ role models; help the current generation recognize they’re not alone; create opportunities for community connections and greater visibility within STEM."
500 Women Scientists
"A resource for journalists, educators, policy makers and others seeking the expertise of women and gender diverse STEMM professionals."
Disabled Writers
"This resource is specifically designed to help editors connect with disabled people working in journalism, or trying to break into the field. It also includes disabled experts who are available to serve as sources, such as attorneys, physicians, social workers, artists, and others with professional experience or education that makes them expert sources in their fields."
Diverse Databases
"As we move toward a more equitable world, every industry is going to need new networks and resources to help them connect with talented people of color. In the spirit of this shared goal, Editors of Color is pleased to provide links to other databases of diverse talent."
Georgia Tech Diversity and Inclusion Project’s Database of Databases
The goal of the Georgia Tech Diversity & Inclusion Fellow project "was to create a web resource where conference, workshop, and panel organizers can locate diverse STEM experts to speak at their event. The result is the “database of databases” in the table below."
NPR Diverse Sources Database
"Find experts from racial and ethnic groups underrepresented in the media."
People of Color Also Know Stuff
"The voices of people of color are often lacking, from news stories and editorial commentary, to public lectures and expert panels. We are building a directory of experts of color on a range of topics in Political Science. This directory allows for easy searching by topic and public engagement experience. "
Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science
SACNAS Biography Project is "an online archive of first-person stories by and about Chicano/Hispanic and Native American scientists with advanced degrees in science."
Women Also Know Stuff
Women Also Know Stuff is a searchable directory of women experts in political science.
Women Experts
Women Experts is a directory of directories to women experts in many fields from around the world.

Journals and Periodicals

Although many of the journals we have in Sherratt Library are available in electronic form, there are times when a print copy is the way to go.

You can look for journals on belonging by searching for one of the keywords in DOAJ. For example, a search for "diversity" finds more than 50 journals that deal with the topic. You can see if the library or one of its databases has a specific journal by searching for its title or doing a simple search for a keyword like "diversity" in our resource finder Find Journal by Title, then limit the results to Journal. The example search found about 30 journals with "diversity" in their title.

Books and Ebooks

Here at Sherratt Library, we use the Library of Congress classification system (call numbers) to organize most of our items, including print books and e-books. You can search the Library Catalog for Outreach & Engagement resources. A catalog search also searches the ebook collections listed below.

EBSCO eBook Comprehensive Academic Collection This link opens in a new window
Many of these ebook titles appropriate for research at the college level are also searchable through the SUU Library Catalog, but due to the rotating nature of this collection, your most effective searching is done directly at the database.

Full text access to over 160,000 eBooks from over 60 publishers including Springer, Taylor & Francis and Wiley Interscience covering a broad range of subject areas and topics. Users can search, cite, browse and read the full text of the eBooks online.
