Disposition – Unclaimed Property

  1. If the owner of any valuable unclaimed property (over $50) cannot be determined or notified, SUU Police will be notified to determine whether the property is stolen. If it has been reported as stolen, the owner will be notified.  If the owner cannot be determined and notified, or if he/she is notified and fails to appear and claim the property after 90 days of its receipt by Lost and Found, the office shall turn the item over to Surplus to be sold at their surplus sale.
  2. All item(s) (under $50 value) will be held for 30 days. If there are no claims for the property within the 30 days the office shall disperse as follows:
    • All clothing and miscellaneous items will be donated to SUU Service and Learning or local charity or good will/thrift store.
  3. KEYS
    • Keys will be held for up to 30 days.
    • If the key has a reward card(s) or can be identified in some other manner, such as Smiths, Gold Gym, etc., and after holding it for 10 days the keys will be turned over to that company to attempt to locate the person to whom the keys belong.
    • If the keys have no reward card(s) then keys will be held for 30 days before they are recycled.
  4. FLASH DRIVES
    • All flash drives will be kept for a period of 30 days.
    • After the 30 days are over all flash drives will be cleared and sold at discounted prices.
  5. STUDENT ID’S
    • All Student ID’s are turned into the SUU Cashiers office after (1) one week.
  6. DRIVERS LICENSES
    • All Drivers Licenses will be mailed back to the designated address after (1) one week.

Claim an item

Items in the lost and found may not be previewed. If the item is in the lost and found and you can identify it, you will need to provide current identification as well as sign a receipt of property returned and provide us with a current phone number. This receipt will be retained as a permanent record on file at the SUU Lost & Found office.

EXAMPLES OF ACCEPTED ITEMS
  • Cell Phones
  • Laptops/flashdrives
  • MP3 Players/iPods
  • Wallets/Purses
  • Eyeglasses
  • Backpacks
  • Keys
  • Jewelry
  • Textbooks
  • Clothing
  • Binders, folders, and notebooks
  • Jackets
  • Hats
  • Sunglasses
  • Any other items of value or importance and items having ownership information

Examples of items NOT accepted

  • Perishable items/Food
  • Flammable items (lighters, etc)
  • Personal grooming items (combs, brushes, bows, ribbons, scrunchies, etc)
  • Intentionally abandoned property (electronic equipment that obviously does not work, damaged furniture, items placed by trash containers for disposal, etc)
  • Any item that is not sanitary (undergarments and clothing of a personal nature, contact lenses, contact lens solutions, ear plugs, socks, towels or cloths of personal use, chemical and medical items such as cleaning solutions or prescription drugs, lotions, hair products, make-up, etc)

Notes:

  1. Some departments/buildings may keep lost and found items from their respective areas for a short amount of time before it is turned in to the Lost and Found. Please feel free to check the department/building where your item might have been lost.
  2. You may also want to leave a note on the white board or on a sticky note somewhere in the room where your lost article was last seen.
