London Calling: A Student Presentation of Poetry

The masterful literary traditions of Great Britain continue to inspire contemporary writers of all sorts. The British influence will be showcased when Southern Utah University's Sherratt Library sponsors an exhibition of poetry authored by SUU students who completed study abroad classes in London during Maymester 2011 (May 9-24, 2011). The exhibition will be on display beginning Wednesday, February 15 continuing through April 15, 2012.

Dr. Danielle Dubrasky of the English Department accompanied SUU students, and spent two weeks reading poetry inspired by the sights and sounds of London. They explored museums, libraries, parks and other locales. They also attended poetry readings by contemporary British poets. A particular highlight of the visit was a tour of British Romantic poet John Keats' house. The exhibition will include prints of paintings from the London National Gallery and Tate Gallery that inspired some of the poems In addition to the "Poetry in London" class, the English department also offered a class on Harry Potter in London, directed by Dr. Kyle Bishop.

In all, a total of 33 English majors participated in the 2011 study abroad program in London. The students stayed at Regent's College through an arrangement made by Dr. Kurt Harris, Director of the Global Engagement Center. A total of 18 students enrolled in intermediate and advanced poetry writing classes traveled to London courtesy of the Global Engagement Center.

All exhibit events are free and open to the public. Additional sponsors for this event include the Global Engagement Center, The College of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Department of English, The English Honors Society Sigma Tau Delta, and SUUSA.
